Colours & Patterns

Ragdoll cats are born almost completely white. Until they reach their full maturity, three to four years may pass during which they develop their coat qualities and intensify the colour contrast. Seaonal changes in fur quality occur.

The FIFe recognises different colours, patters and subpatterns in Ragdolls. The three patterns are Colourpoint, Mitted and Bicolour. The colours have to be dark and intense resulting in a large contrast between the light overall body colour and the “points.”

Colourpoint: The term colourpoint refers to the two most striking features of these cats: 1) their colour (see table below) and 2) their points. Points are the paws, face (mask), ears and tail. No areas of the fur are allowed to be white.

Mitted: Mitted Ragdolls are similar to the colourpoints. However, some of their points are white (front paw tips, rear legs from the paws up to the hocks and they have a white chin and chest). The other points (ears and tail) look the same as in colourpoint Ragdolls. Their underside is white from the chin towards the start of the tail.

Bicolour: These cats have two distinct colours (name!). The colour on their ears and top of the head is the name giving colour (see table below), the second colour is white. As in the other Ragdoll patterns their tail and mask are coloured, but white is much more present than in the mitted type. Most striking is the inverted “V” in the mask, white legs and underside. The upper side may contain white patches, but they should not exceed a third of the surface of the upper side.

Red and cream are light colours. Since the tortie is a mix of colours, the FIFe-Code will always be based on the dark colour. Red tortie or cream tortie repectively do therefore not exist.

All of the above listed combinations may exhibit a tabby-subpattern which is indicated in the FIFe-Code by adding “21” at the end. A Ragdoll being seal bicolour tabby would therefore get the FIFE-Code: RAG n 03 21.
